Spinning Yarns - The Lithgow Tweed & Woollen Mills Story

18 September to 13 october 2007 at the Lithgow Learning Centre
Main Street, Lithgow

Spanning 115 years of operation the Lithgow Woollen Mills was amongst a few of the oldest tweed and cloth manufacturers in Australia when it ceased operation in 1977. In 2005 the Lithgow Woollen Mills Collection was deemed nationally significant having produced clothing for Australian Soldiers during the First & Second World War’ and the Korean & Vietnam War periods.

This nationally significant exhibition will be on display during September at the Lithgow Learning Centre and will feature weaving looms, wooden bobbins & shuttles, spinning machines, rolls of woollen yarn, tweed samples, a watercolour dated February 22nd 1884 of the Tweed Factory Mills by T.G. Moyle, a dated keystone c.1837, photographs and newspaper articles all covering some 115 years of operation of the Lithgow Tweed & Woollen Mills.

On the Run: Daring Convict Escapes

26 November to 8 December 2007 at the Lithgow Learning Centre
Main Street, Lithgow

In the late 19th century Australia was a strange new land at the edge of the known world. This geographical isolation was a major reason for selecting the colony as a British penal settlement. The formidable barriers of distance, impenetrable bush and wide oceans made escape a daunting proposition — yet hundreds of convicts made the attempt.

The Lithgow Learning Centre will be featuring an exciting touring exhibition from the State Library of NSW. The exhibition will tell the story of daring convict escapes and will include items from the Eskbank House & Museum collection focusing on the local Convict Stockades of Mt Walker, Hassans Walls and Bowen Hollow.

The Library Book Fair

Recently the Lithgow Library Learning Centre held a very successful book fair over three days, with the early birds having the best choice of books, from picture books through to novels and non fiction. It didn’t take long for boxes of books to be walking out the doors. The remainder of books that didn’t get sold are being sent to Rotary for shipment overseas.

New Library System Upgrade

Recently the Library upgraded the Library Management System which manages the catalogue and borrower records. The upgrade has not only made life easier for the staff, it has new features for our customers, especially those accessing the catalogue from home via the internet.

A feature of the new system is the ability to retain your loan history – no more wondering if you have already read a certain book. If you would like to use this feature, please let the staff know next time you borrow, and they will enable this on your account.

Residents of the Lithgow LGA are now able to join the library from home. This will allow first time borrowers to reserve books and pick them up when they come in to complete their registration.

Members will be able to set up profiles online, and automatically receive emails notifying them when books by favourite authors or on preferred topics are added to the catalogue.

To coincide with the new system, we have increased the number of items you can borrow to 25. This can be made up of 15 books, cds, cassettes or cd roms, 5 magazines, 3 videos and 2 DVD’s. Please note that you will now only be able to renew items a maximum of three times.
